Salt Spring trustees advance accessory-dwelling bylaw for consultation

The committee gave proposed Bylaw 530 a second reading with amendments and directed staff to prepare engagement materials with a trustee and members of the Housing Action Program Task Force.

The proposed rules would allow accessory dwelling units, with a minimum 4.5-metre setback from an interior side lot line and shared driveway access with the principal residence unless a rear lane provides access. The Salt Spring Island Local Trust Committee gave the amended Bylaw 530 a second reading on April 13, 2023.[1]

The committee directed staff to develop and carry out an engagement plan and communication materials with a trustee and a sub-quorum of the Housing Action Program Task Force. Trustee Laura Patrick was appointed to work on that plan.[1]

The committee also directed staff to monitor uptake and report back two years after the bylaw’s adoption; the motion recorded the committee’s anticipation that uptake of available lots would be less than 10%. The committee’s decision does not record adoption of the bylaw.[1]
