The proposed Bylaw 530 public hearing will be scheduled for September 2023, after Salt Spring Island Local Trust Committee members amended a motion that had proposed a July 12 hearing. The amended motion passed, with Trustee Jamie Harris opposed.[1]
The committee also asked staff to identify options for further amendments based on feedback from open houses and other relevant information about accessory dwelling units in rural areas. That motion passed, with Harris opposed.[1]
A separate motion asking staff to prepare communication materials illustrating decisions and approvals for an accessory dwelling unit also passed, with Harris opposed.[1]
During discussion, the minutes record a trustee saying that many people could not attend meetings because they could not leave work, and another suggesting a meeting with Tsawout First Nation to address its concerns. Staff said they had previously engaged with the First Nation at the committee’s direction and that government-to-government discussion might be more productive.[1]
The minutes record Trustee Laura Patrick expressing support for a version of an Accessory Dwelling Unit Bylaw that would facilitate some island residents providing housing legally. She said the Official Community Plan review was an opportunity to create a proactive planning project serving a diverse community.[1]
