Salt Spring committee backs brewery lounge application

The committee recommended approval of a liquor-licence change for Salt Spring Island Brewing, after hearing support and opposition at its July meeting.

The Salt Spring Island Local Trust Committee recommended that the Liquor and Cannabis Regulation Branch approve an application for a permanent outdoor patio and lounge area at Salt Spring Island Brewing, and revised operating hours at the Furness Road site.[1] The committee said the use was permitted by zoning and that the potential noise impact on the immediate community would be minimal.[1]

The decision followed public comments both opposing and supporting the application during the meeting’s town hall.[1] The minutes record concerns about environmental issues, road traffic, ownership and zoning, as well as support for the application.[1]

A brewery employee told the committee the lounge request was for the inside of the tasting room and would allow customers to stay indoors in winter; the employee said the application was intended to support local events and winter employment.[2] The employee also said the request would not increase wastewater.[2]

The committee also directed staff to include the community consultation record and materials received at the meeting in its response to the liquor regulator.[1] Both motions carried.[1]
