The Salt Spring Island Local Trust Committee voted to forward the top three priorities on its active projects list to Trust Council, following discussion of staff capacity, First Nations engagement and the Official Community Plan and Land Use Bylaw review. The minutes identify that review as the committee’s highest-priority project.[1]

Regional Planning Manager Chris Hutton told the committee that work was underway on the review’s project charter and that staff were considering updates to First Nations at each phase of the project. The minutes record the committee’s resolution to forward the priorities as carried.[1]

In the meeting recording, Hutton said the quarterly report was intended to keep trustees informed about the Salt Spring office’s work and staffing situation. He described coordination with the Local Community Commission and relationship-building with First Nations as additional demands on the office, while saying the work was manageable in the context of declining applications and the pace of current work.[2]

Trustee Laura Patrick said the Official Community Plan and Land Use Bylaw project was the most important project to prepare for, and called for more engagement funding. Hutton said letters had gone to First Nations the previous month and that staff were following up; he also described plans to communicate at each phase of the review.[2]

The minutes record that the committee’s motion to forward the top three priorities to Trust Council carried. They also record approval of a three-year temporary use permit for a Ganges Village Area food truck and retail and office spaces, and three readings of a bylaw concerning 200 Collins Road.[1]

But in terms of what we do next and what LTC wants to do next in the following fiscal and how we can do that in a structured way that leads to successes is kind of open-ended here for LTC.
