Staff are to prioritize the Kings Lane rezoning application and any associated applications, after the Salt Spring Island Local Trust Committee passed a motion directing them to do so at its June 5 meeting.[1]
The application seeks to change zoning so affordable housing would not be limited to seniors, retain an existing housing agreement with some language changes, allow more flexibility for office uses at the health centre, remove the cap on medical practitioners and facilitate subdivision of the clinic portion of the property, according to the meeting minutes.[1]
The Gulf Islands Seniors Residence Association’s vice-chair told the committee the association had submitted the rezoning application and asked staff to expedite it, citing funding opportunities and a need for workforce housing.[2]
The minutes say the committee discussed the application’s potential priority; the regional planning manager described the current workload and said a planner could focus on it if the committee gave direction.[1]
The committee also received a presentation on Salt Spring Solutions’ housing engagement project. The minutes record that its online survey received 657 responses, with 70% supporting clustered housing to preserve rural areas, 71% supporting accessory dwelling units in appropriate locations and 73% saying more housing in Ganges is necessary to address housing needs.[1]
