The Salt Spring Island Board of Variance approved application PLBOV20260029 for relaxations of setback requirements from the natural boundary of the sea to accommodate a sewage disposal field on Clamshell Islet, subject to a completion report by the professional engineer when the project is complete.[1]
The board’s motion said it had considered matters set out in section 542(1)(c) of the Local Government Act and found undue hardship would be caused if section 531(1) were complied with.[1]
The minutes record differing views on whether the variance was minor: the chair called it significant, while the other board members suggested it was minor.[1]
The minutes also record questions about First Nations discussions, other waste-management options and environmental concerns; they note that archaeological sites had not been identified on the islet and that no land would be dug up for the system.[1]
The motion carried, with Chair Lisa Floritto opposed.[1]
